POAC-HV
POAC-HV
is a non-profit group. It was
formed by parents, with the support of the Autism Directory Service,
for two
reasons, to share scientifically researched based teaching techniques
with
parents, educators, and related personnel who provide direct services
to
children with autism and other related developmental disabilities and
to
provide social recreational programs for these children.
About Autism
Autism is a
neurological disorder that impacts brain function and normal brain
development. It
impairs language,
cognitive abilities and social skills.
Autism
is the most widely diagnosed developmental disability in the nation. The incidence of Autism is
increasing at an
alarming rate. In
1980, one out of every
10,000 children was diagnosed, while in 2004, one out of every 166
children was
diagnosed. While
there is no known cure
for Autism, the outcomes for children with Autism and related disorders
can be
improved by using research based scientific teaching techniques.
About POAC-HV's Mission
As Parents Of Autistic Children, we know first-hand that managing the cost of training teachers and teaching assistants in the latest researched based methods, is a challenging responsibility for our local schools to bear. However, we have also seen firsthand the reward of watching our children increase their vocal and cognitive abilities. Therefore, we must continue to work vigorously to attain our mission and vision, which is to:
